Transforming lives through fashion: The RISE & Bloom Fashion Show

On October 10, 2024, the Knowlton in Bridgeport came alive with fashion, music, and community spirit as it hosted the Rise & Bloom Fashion Show, a celebration of Family Reentry’s 40th anniversary. The event was an incredible fusion of art, advocacy, and empowerment, intending to raise awareness for the nonprofit’s mission to support individuals and families affected by behavioral health challenges, domestic violence, and the complexities of reentry.

Emceed by Dice Raw of The Roots, the evening excitedly lit up. Nigerian Afro-Dancehall artist Lamoginny brought the house down with a high-energy performance that got the audience on their feet, making it a night to remember.

The star of the evening was Vernice Holmes, a Norwalk-based visionary artist and fashion designer who showcased her latest collection from Sixty by Vernice. With her bold, thematic fashion show productions, Vernice’s work has long celebrated resilience and transformation. Rise & Bloom was no exception. Each piece in her collection told a story of personal renewal and strength, incorporating her signature use of embellishments like glitter, crystals, and vibrant textures. “I love taking people’s stories and turning them into dreams through clothing,” Vernice said, reflecting her dedication to using fashion as empowerment.

Adding even more depth to the event, creators from Equalshumans played a vital role in making the fashion show a success. Equalshumans provided fashion, makeup artists, models, and media/tech support for the evening, showcasing the spirit of collaboration central to the brand and Family Reentry’s mission. Their contributions ensured the evening ran smoothly and visually stunned everyone in attendance.

The event was a resounding success with over 200 attendees, including notable figures like Mayor Joe Ganim and Senator Herron Keyon Gaston. Attendees from across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts showed their support for Family Reentry’s work. Thanks to Nicholson Events Inc., the stunning lighting and technical production elevated the event to a new level, adding to the experience.

At its core, the Rise & Bloom Fashion Show wasn’t just about showcasing beautiful designs and using fashion as a voice for those returning to society after incarceration. Family Reentry has been a cornerstone in the community for 40 years, offering support, evidence-based services, and hope to those facing difficult transitions. This evening, we brought that message home, reminding everyone of the importance of compassion, collaboration, and the belief that change is possible when we come together as a community.
